What is the 11+?

The 11+ is an academic exam taken by children applying to grammar schools. Children take it in the autumn term of Year 6. Grammar schools use the results from the 11+ test to decide which children to offer places to in Year 7.

The exam is designed to be challenging. Grammar schools use it to identify children working at the top of their year group.

The subjects tested can vary, depending on which school you're applying to. Grammar schools usually test some or all of these subjects:

The grammar schools in Slough are members of the Slough Consortium. Your child will only need to take one 11+ exam to apply to any of these grammar schools.

Grammar schools in Buckinghamshire

All grammar schools in Buckinghamshire are members of The Buckinghamshire Grammar Schools – a local 11+ consortium. Your child will only need to take one 11+ exam to apply to any grammar school in Buckinghamshire.

The four grammar schools in Dorset are members of the Dorset Consortium. Your child will only need to take one 11+ exam to apply to any of these schools.

Grammar schools in Essex

All of the grammar schools in Essex except Chelmsford County High School for Girls are members of the Consortium of Selective Schools in Essex (CSSE). If your child is applying to any grammar school within the CSSE, they only need to take one 11+ exam.

All grammar schools in Gloucestershire are members of the Gloucestershire Grammar School Consortium. Children applying to any of these schools only need to take the Gloucestershire Grammar Schools Entrance Test once.

All of the following schools use the Sutton Selective Eligibility Test (SET) to assess children for entry. Children who perform well in the SET are shortlisted for a second-stage exam to apply to a grammar school.

Wandsworth

There are no grammar schools in Wandsworth, but five state schools are partially selective. Children applying for a selective place at one of these schools take the Wandsworth Test.

Grammar schools in Greater Manchester

All of the grammar schools except Loreto Grammar School and Saint Ambrose College are members of the Trafford Consortium. Children applying to any of these five grammar schools only need to take one 11+ exam.

If your child is applying to Loreto Grammar School or Saint Ambrose College, they will need to take the school's own tests.

Grammar schools in Hertfordshire

There are no fully-selective state schools in Hertfordshire. There are 14 partially-selective schools, of which seven are members of the South West Herts Schools Consortium.

Children applying for a specific place at any of these schools only need to take the test once.

All of the grammar schools in Medway use the Medway Test to assess children for entry. Your child will only need to take the Medway Test once to apply to any of these schools.

Grammar schools in Merseyside

Calday Grange Grammar School, West Kirby Grammar School, Wirral Grammar School for Boys and Wirral Grammar School for Girls all use the Wirral Admissions Test to assess children for entry. The other grammar schools in Merseyside have their own 11+ exams.

Children applying to any grammar school in the West Midlands will only need to take one exam. This is known as the West Midlands Grammar Schools Entrance Test.
