Choosing the right school for your child is a big decision. You want your child somewhere they'll grow, somewhere they'll feel at home, and you want to feel sure about the choice.

To help you navigate your options, we've pulled together the top 100 secondary schools in the UK, ranked by GCSE and A-level performance, based on data published by The Times in December 2025. Read on to find out more.

This blog will cover:

  • How the ranking works
  • The top 100 secondary schools in the UK
  • Grammar vs independent schools: what's the difference?
  • What really shapes how well your child does at secondary school?
  • 5 ways to help your child thrive at secondary school

How does this ranking work?

This list ranks schools by their GCSE results and the percentage of students achieving grades 9–7 (equivalent to the old A*/A). Where schools are tied on GCSE performance, A-level A*–B results are used as a tiebreaker. Both figures are shown in the table below.

Choosing a school involves far more than results alone. Every child has different strengths, interests, and ways of learning. However, academic outcomes are a powerful indicator of the environment a school creates, and this list is designed to help you understand how that environment could influence your child's educational journey.

Grammar schools vs independent schools: what's the difference?

You'll have noticed the table includes both grammar schools and independent schools. Here's a quick breakdown of what those labels mean.

Grammar schools

Grammar schools are state-funded, which means they're free to attend. They select pupils based on academic ability, usually through the 11+ entrance exam taken in Year 6. Grammar schools are only available in certain areas of England.

Take a look at our guide to grammar schools to find out whether there are any near you.

Independent schools

Independent schools (also called private schools or fee-paying schools) charge tuition fees and are not funded by the government. They set their own curriculum and tend to offer a broad, academically focused education. Some offer scholarships or bursaries based on academic ability or financial need.

Both types of school appear throughout this top 100, and both produce students who achieve excellent GCSE results every year.

How do children earn a place at schools like these?

The schools on this list are among the most sought-after in the country. What they also have in common is that they are selective, which means earning a place takes preparation, and the right kind of it. For grammar schools, that means passing the 11+. For independent schools, it is a school-specific entrance exam.

These are not exams you can cram for at the last minute. The children who earn a place at schools like these tend to have one thing in common: they built the right foundations early, and they kept going.

That is exactly what Atom is built to help with. Atom works with children to build the right skills, habits, and confidence they need to perform in selective entrance exams and to thrive once they get to secondary school.

How to help your child earn a place at a top secondary school

1. Start earlier than you think you need to

Most parents begin thinking about secondary school entrance exams in Year 5. The families who tend to get the best results start much earlier than that. Years 3 and 4 are the ideal time to begin building the core skills that selective exams test, not because the exam is close, but because there is enough time to build real understanding rather than surface-level familiarity.

Short, regular practice over a longer period is far more effective than intensive preparation in the final months. Even 15 minutes a day, started early, adds up to something significant by the time the exam arrives.

2. Understand what the exam actually involves

The 11+ and independent school entrance exams test more than what is covered in the standard primary school curriculum. Depending on the school and the area, your child may face verbal reasoning, non-verbal reasoning, maths, and English, each with their own question styles and formats.

Verbal reasoning and non-verbal reasoning in particular can feel unfamiliar at first, to children and parents alike, as they aren’t taught in the national curriculum. The good news is that they are very learnable. Children who practise these skills regularly improve significantly, and the earlier they start, the more natural the questions become.

Atom covers all four subject areas and adapts to your child's level as they progress, targeting the specific topics and question types that need the most work to succeed in their target school entrance exam. Rather than working through content your child has already mastered, every session moves them forward from exactly where they are. It is the most efficient way to prepare.

3. Find and fix the gaps before they matter

One of the most valuable things you can do in Years 3 to 5 is find out exactly where your child's gaps are. A small gap in maths or vocabulary that feels manageable in Year 3 can become much harder to close in Year 5 when there is less time and more ground to cover.

Getting a clear picture of where your child stands across all four exam subjects early gives you the time to address weaknesses properly, without the pressure of an imminent deadline.

Atom's detailed progress tracking shows you exactly where your child is strong and where they need more work, so nothing is left to chance.

4. Build confidence alongside knowledge

Selective entrance exams are as much a test of confidence as they are of ability. Children who feel calm, prepared, and familiar with the format of the exam perform significantly better than children who are equally able but anxious on the day.

The way you talk about the exam at home matters. Treating preparation as a normal, manageable part of everyday life, rather than something to worry about, helps your child approach it with the right mindset. The goal is a child who walks into the exam feeling ready, not one who is exhausted before they get there.

5. Make consistency the priority, not intensity

It can be tempting, especially in the final months before an exam, to dramatically increase the amount of preparation your child is doing. The evidence suggests this is rarely the most effective approach. Children who practise consistently over a longer period, with sessions that are short and focused, tend to perform better than those who do very little and then a great deal.

The families who get the best results are not always the ones who pushed hardest. They are the ones who started early, kept going, and gave their child the time to build real understanding rather than just familiarity with exam questions.

Give your child the best chance at a top secondary school

A place at one of these schools is absolutely achievable, and the path to getting there is more straightforward than it might seem. The foundations which get children into schools like these are within reach for every family. They are built early, one session at a time. Atom is designed to make that as simple and effective as possible.

Find out how Atom helps your child build the foundations they need to thrive at secondary school.
