Frequently Asked Questions
SATs take place in May and are completed over four days. Children usually sit one or two papers each day:
- Monday: English paper 1 and English paper 2
- Tuesday: English paper 3
- Wednesday: Maths paper 1 and maths paper 2
- Thursday: Maths paper 3
SATs cover the full Key Stage 2 curriculum in English and maths. This includes:
- English: reading, spelling, vocabulary, grammar and punctuation
- Maths: number, data, geometry, algebra, measurement, ratio and proportion
Children take six papers in total — three in English and three in maths.
SATs (Standard Assessment Tests) are national tests taken in primary schools in England. They check how well children have learned the Key Stage 2 curriculum and give teachers a clear picture of each child’s strengths and areas to develop.
Year 6 SATs assess English and maths. You can read more in our guide to Year 6 SATs.
SATs help teachers understand how well each child has grasped key skills before they move on to secondary school. They highlight where support or stretch may be needed and help schools plan teaching effectively.
Some secondary schools also use SATs results to help place pupils into the right groups for English and/or maths in Year 7. Feeling confident and prepared can help your child start secondary school in a group that best suits their ability.
