Frequently Asked Questions
These baseline tests are suitable for children in Years 4 and 5 and early Year 6 who are applying to Kent grammar schools. These tests show where your child currently stands in terms of their understanding of the test content.
We expect that a child in Year 4 would find these questions more difficult than a child approaching Year 6, but the test will indicate where your child can focus their learning.
The Kent Test consists of two papers, each one hour in length:
- Paper 1: English (30 minutes) and maths (30 minutes).
- Paper 2: Verbal reasoning (30 minutes) and non-verbal and spatial reasoning (30 minutes). The non-verbal and spatial reasoning section is broken down into smaller timed sections.

Our baseline tests contain the same types of questions your child will see on the Kent Test. These baseline tests have 30 questions per test (the number of questions in the real Kent Test varies per subject) and are taken online, while the real Kent Test is taken on paper.
Atom Home has unlimited paper tests that exactly match the content, format and timing of the Kent Test.
No, these tests are untimed, allowing your child to complete them at their own pace. This ensures you get a clear and accurate picture of their understanding without the pressure of a time limit.

Your child's results include:
- A raw score: The total number of questions your child answered correctly.
- A Standardised Age Score (SAS): This compares your child’s performance to others of the same age. It’s the same type of score used in real 11+ exams to help schools rank candidates fairly. Learn more about age standardisation.
- An answer report: A full breakdown of which questions your child got right and wrong, so you can see exactly how they performed.
- Topic-by-topic insights: Understand which topics your child is confident in, and where there’s room for improvement.
Your child will get three standardised scores from the Kent Test – one for English, one for maths, and one for reasoning. They'll also get one total (aggregate) score.
To pass the exam, your child will need a total score of 332 or more, with no single score lower than 106.
If your child achieves a score of higher than 106 in both our Kent baseline assessments, they are on track to do well in the exam.
We recommend that your child takes this test independently, without any help. This will ensure that the results you receive accurately reflect your child’s performance.
For the best experience, we recommend that your child takes the baseline test when they’re feeling refreshed and ready to focus. A quiet room, free from distractions, is best!
As soon as your child finishes a test, you’ll receive an email with a link to a detailed breakdown of their performance. This will highlight their strengths and the topics they need to focus on.
Our baseline tests will help you identify strengths and weaknesses so your child can focus their 11+ preparation. For the best results, we recommend using structured practice with Atom Home.
Your child can take these baseline tests more than once, but they will see the same questions. However, you can access unlimited practice tests with an Atom Home subscription. See new questions every time!
Your child’s results will highlight the topics they need to focus on. You can support their learning with free 11+ familiarisation resources or by trying Atom Home. This provides adaptive learning, unlimited practice questions, and full-length mock tests.
