Frequently Asked Questions
These tests are for children in Years 4, 5 and early Year 6 who are preparing for a grammar school 11+ exam supplied by Quest Assessments. They show where your child is now across English, maths, verbal reasoning and non-verbal reasoning.Quest exams are based on learning up to the end of Year 5, so younger children may find some questions challenging. That's completely normal. The results will still show where to focus as they continue learning.
Our baseline tests use Quest-style practice questions, written in the style and structure of Quest assessments. They cover the four subjects Quest can assess (English, maths, verbal reasoning and non-verbal reasoning), so your child gets true-to-format practice before the real thing.Looking for more Quest practice? Atom Home offers unlimited Quest practice tests online and on paper.
Quest is used by several grammar schools and consortia, including the Bexley Selection Test, the Plymouth 11+ and the Wirral Admissions Test. Some individual schools also use it, including Tiffin School, Colyton Grammar School and Dover Grammar School for Girls. Each school decides which subjects it tests, so always check your target school's admissions information. Our guide to Quest Assessments 11+ exams lists every school and when Quest applies.
Quest exams can test any combination of four subjects. Each school chooses which ones:
- English: reading comprehension, grammar, vocabulary and spelling
- Maths: Key Stage 2 content up to the end of Year 5
- Verbal reasoning: word patterns, codes, analogies and language-based logic
- Non-verbal reasoning: sequences, shapes, rotation and visual problem-solving
The exams are paper-based and mostly multiple choice. Children record their answers on a separate answer sheet and can use the question booklet for working out. Children usually sit the exam early in the autumn term of Year 6.
Your child's results include:
- A Standardised Age Score (SAS): the same type of score grammar schools use to rank applicants. Find out more in our guide to what makes a good 11+ score.
- An answer report: a full breakdown of which questions your child got right and wrong.
- Topic-by-topic insights: which topics your child is confident in, and where there's room to improve.
