Frequently Asked Questions
This test is designed for children in Years 5, 6 and early Year 7 who are preparing for the CAT4 — whether for selective school admissions, streaming, or to get a sense of their current reasoning ability.
The baseline covers levels B to D, making it suitable for children aged 9–12. Younger children may find the questions more challenging, but the results will highlight areas for growth as they continue their preparation.
Our baseline test reflects the exact question types found across all four CAT4 batteries. There are 30 questions in total — please bear in mind that the real CAT4 is longer and individually timed by section.
This baseline is untimed, so your child can work through it at their own pace. Looking for full-length practice? Atom Home offers online CAT4 practice with unlimited mock tests that mirror the timing, content, and structure of the real exam.
The CAT4 is a non-adaptive test; every child answers the same questions in the same order. It assesses reasoning ability across four batteries:
- Verbal Reasoning: verbal classification and verbal analogies
- Quantitative Reasoning: number analogies and number series
- Non-Verbal Reasoning: figure classification and figure matrices
- Spatial Reasoning: figure analysis and figure recognition
The full CAT4 takes 72 minutes and is made up of seven individually timed sections. Take a look at our guide to the CAT4 to learn more.
The baseline includes questions at levels B to D, which are appropriate for children aged 9–12 (Years 5–7). These are the levels most commonly sat by children taking the CAT4 as part of an 11+ admissions process or for secondary school streaming.
No, this test is untimed, allowing your child to complete it at their own pace. This ensures you get a clear and accurate picture of their understanding without the pressure of a time limit.
Want to introduce timed practice? You can access timed CAT4 practice tests with an Atom Home subscription.
Your child's results include:
- A raw score: The total number of questions your child answered correctly.
- An answer report: A full breakdown of which questions your child got right and wrong, so you can see exactly how they performed.
- Topic-by-topic insights: Understand which topics your child is confident in, and where there’s room for improvement.
As soon as your child finishes a test, you’ll receive an email with a link to a detailed breakdown of their performance. This will highlight their strengths and the topics they need to focus on.
Yes. While the CAT4 is designed to assess natural reasoning ability rather than learned knowledge, practising the question formats makes a real difference. For many children, the CAT4 is one of their first experiences of a formal timed assessment, and the question types can feel unfamiliar at first.
Building comfort with verbal, quantitative, non-verbal, and spatial reasoning questions beforehand means your child can focus on problem-solving on the day, rather than working out what's being asked. Atom offers CAT4 practice questionsand mock tests across all four batteries.
Yes, we recommend that your child takes the test independently. This will ensure the results give an accurate reflection of their ability.
For best results, encourage them to take the test in a quiet environment when they’re feeling focused.
No, our CAT4 baseline test is completely free.
Your child's results will pinpoint the areas they need to work on. You can support their preparation with Atom Home, which offers adaptive learning, unlimited CAT4 practice questions, and full-length mock tests across all four batteries.
Your child can take the baseline test more than once, but they will see the same questions. However, you can access unlimited CAT4 practice tests with an Atom Home subscription. See new questions every time!
