What's the format of the Cambridge IGCSE Physics exam?

Your school will choose whether you follow the Core or Extended route, plus one of two practical options.

If you're on the Core route, you'll sit:

  • Paper 1: Multiple Choice. 45 minutes, worth 40 marks (30%).
    • 40 questions, each with four possible answers, covering the Core content only.

There's no separate formula sheet, but you'll be given a table of physical quantities, symbols and units to refer to in your written papers.

What are the grade boundaries for Cambridge IGCSE Physics?

It's important to remember that the exact grade boundaries for your exams will change every year. Cambridge sets them after the exam has been sat, based on how difficult the papers were and how the whole cohort performed.

How can I prepare for Cambridge IGCSE Physics?

Here are 5 top tips to help you get ready:

1. Learn your equations and know when to use them

Physics calculation questions test whether you can pick the right equation as much as whether you can rearrange and solve it. Build a single equation sheet organised by topic, and practise identifying which equation a question needs before you start calculating.

Top tip: Cover the equation sheet and try to recall each equation from its topic heading alone, since knowing when to use an equation is half the skill.

2. Practise rearranging equations before the exam

Even where you're given an equation, many questions ask you to rearrange it to find a different quantity. Practise rearranging your key equations regularly so this step doesn't cost you time under pressure.

Top tip: For every equation you learn, practise rearranging it for each different variable, not just the one you usually calculate.

3. Get comfortable with practical and data questions

Whether you sit the Practical Test or the Alternative to Practical paper, both test the same experimental skills, including identifying variables, reading graphs and evaluating methods. Practise past questions on experimental design regularly, not just content recall.

Top tip: When asked to evaluate an experiment, always mention at least one improvement and explain exactly how it would improve accuracy.

4. Show your working on every calculation
